As a growing photographer who specializes in street photography, I try to capture everyday life in the city. Whether it’s bike riding or pictures of cars and buildings, I like to capture New York in its most authentic state. New York City is a big part of who I am, so it’s important for me to capture what I find intriguing in this huge city. Photography is a therapeutic experience for me—most of my photos are from walks I’ve gone on alone. That element of solitude in such a busy city is reflected in my work. I’ve always been drawn to color photography, but I’ve grown to love black-and-white photography during my time in Expanding the Walls. In the program, I was introduced to the work of Joel Meyerowitz. When I saw his photos and researched his story, I was instantly inspired. The authenticity of his street photography and his use of color caught my eye. When I’m shooting in color, I pay attention to how the colors complement each other. Ultimately, my love for cinema inspires my practice. A film in particular that I’m inspired by is Martin Scorsese’s Taxi Driver. For the New York–born Scorsese, the city is his canvas. The way shots are framed and his use of color are reflected in my New York.
